(December 29): The Birth of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji
-
The date of 'Poh Sudi Saptami' (or, the seventh day from the new moon in the month of Poh) on the Bikrami Lunar Calendar denotes the arrival of the Tenth Master, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, upon this world in their five-elemental body. One needs not to mention the supreme traits and actions of the Tenth Gurū, for their praise in this world is eternal, and resounds in all directions. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji took birth in the house of the Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and Mata Gujri, within the ancient city of Patna, present day Bihar. At the time of the Tenth Gurū's birth, (then named Gobind Das), Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji were on their their tour of Assam with Raja Ram Singh of Amber. Meanwhile, at Patna, grand festivities took place on the occassion of the child's birth. Large congregations of Sikhs visit the house of the Gurū in order to have a glimpse of the newborn son of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. A prominent event which occurs at this time, as recorded by Kavi Santokh Singh in his 'Sri Gur Pratap Suraj Granth,' is the arrival of a Jyotishi, or astrologer, who analyzes the horoscope of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He reveals that the son of the Gurū has been born within a very auspicious Lagna—the Lagna of the warrior. Presented on this auspicious occassion, is a complete translation of the episode from the aforementioned work of Kavi Santokh Singh, pertaining to the birth of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji:

Chapter 12,
Dasmésh Avṯār.
The embodiment of all Maʼngals [praises], the supreme form of all ardours;
Shining brighter than all lights, the supreme form of all powers, and the crusher of all egoistic beings;
The preserver of ancient tradition, the pleaser of saints, and the destroyer of enemies;
The uprooter of the Turks, [Guru Gobind Singh] has incarnated within this world, for the benevolence of mankind. [1]
Like a Tiger, [The Guru] walked fearlessly along the river of the [Hill Rajas'] antagonism [towards Him].
To sanctify the temples of the Hindus; to solidify [the Hindus’] position [against the Turks], and to destroy all sin,
He [not only] established the supreme Khalsa Panth, but joined [the Khalsa] Himself [upon receiving Pahul].
Says Kavi [Santokh] Singh, [Guru Gobind Singh] has taken birth to bestow care upon such destitutes as myself. [2]
[The Guru] has perforated the flower-garden of slanderers; the owls of hypocrisy have hid.
He has caused sunlight, in the form of devotion [Bhakti], to spread; egoistic beings, in the form of stars, have been dispelled.
The immense darkness of unrighteousness that was prevalent; [the Guru] got rid of that darkness at once.
[He has] manifested in the same way the Sun rises at dawn, and allowed servants, like myself, to bloom like a lotus. [3]
When the time arrived for the parturition of the fortunate Mata Gujri,
Then a child, possessing a unique splendour, took birth.
[At that moment,] a lamp-stand of eight earthen lamps illuminated the house.
Consider that [with the birth of the Guru,] the Sun had risen, and thus, the light from the lamp-stand appeared inferior. [4]
All the female nurses and midwives who had served Mata Gujri,
Gave her their blissful congratulations.
Inside [the house] and out, all the female and male servants,
Roam around, embodying great delight within their hearts. [5]
Among each other, embodying immense enthusiasm and joy,
They meet and embrace, saying praises.
“A sahibzada has taken birth within the house of [Guru Tegh Bahadur].
[He has] brought joy to all of His servants.” [6]
Upon having a glimpse of the face of her grandson,
Mata Nanaki felt very delighted.
Consider that a beautiful red lotus has blossomed.
Like the moon, the house possesses an elegant splendour. [7]
As morning arrived, good wishes ensued.
Gathering together, a congregation arrived.
They performed various forms of spectacles;
Singing the hymns of the True Guru. [8]
The Rabab and Mridangam greatly resounded.
[The devotees] performed Kirtan of hymns with great splendour.
They prepared great amounts of Panchamrit [Karāh Prasād],
And made supplications at the door to the house of the Guru. [9]
Proclaiming "Dhan Guru," they shared and consumed [the Prasād].
“It is our great fortune that [the Guru] considers us His servants.”
Bhatts, songsters, and Dhadis arrive.
They give their congratulations, and express their best wishes. [10]
The wives of the deities, in the form of eunuchs,
Arrive, whilst looting all the splendour of the world.
They play Dholaks, Bells, Ghunghurs and clap their hands.
Singing the Bilawal Raga, they twirl around. [11]
They all play instruments and clap their hands in rhythm.
Ghungurs, on the ankles of all, are chiming.
They move their bodies to the cadence of the songs.
Singing and dancing, they create a pleasant atmosphere. [12]
In such a way, they move with grace.
Giving their wondrous [performance], they steal the hearts of all.
Around the door to the house of the exalted Guru,
There was a crowd; amid which one could not even find a place to stand. [13]
Taking the form of human beings, the Gandharvas sing.
Hearing them, the residents of the city remain astonished, [and say,]
“They are singing and dancing with such elegance;
Like such we have never heard or seen before. [14]
From which country does this group hail?
They have such a unique form and guise.”
Upon hearing their Ragas, none had the power [to ask];
Nobody said a single word to guess. [15]
After performing such spectacles for Four Gharris,
[The deities and Gandharvas] first prostrated to the door of [the Guru’s] house,
Then, after paying obeisance, they returned to their abode.
Nobody could gain any knowledge about them. [16]
There are immense amounts of colourful flowers,
which [are to be] braided to form large garlands.
Upon hearing this, many garland-makers arrive;
They pay obeisance to the court of the Guru. [17]
They are rewarded great amounts of money,
Upon hanging the flower-garlands on the doors of the house.
Grand festivities ensued among the congregation;
Everyone arrived and glimpsed at the Guru's home. [18]
Just as they arrive, embodying wishes and desires,
Thus do they obtain the fulfillment of their wishes.
Then, an astrologist was invited [to the house];
He was given the details of the time of birth. [19]
When he learned that the Lagna was superior [among all],
The astrologist became very delighted, [and said,]
“[The horoscope] of [this child] has the ideal Yoga,
Like which, no one else has had before. [20]
[Guru Gobind Singh] will rid many of their hardships.
His praises shall prevail within the entire world.
The Four Treasures will rest on the palm of His hand.
Everyone will worship His lotus-feet. [21]
His Lagna contains the best attributes within it.
However, my heart has one large concern.
O Kirpal [Chand]! If you listen to my concern,
How could anything improper occur? [22]
All things of which I have spoken until now,
Can only come true in this way;
[Guru Gobind Singh] Has taken birth within the exalted house of the Satguru.
The Sikhs will offer Him large sums of money and pay worship. [23]
All things, including the singing of their praises, shall occur.
Except one thing shall occur contrarily.
When [Guru Gobind Singh] will come of age, and uphold power,
Then He shall embody immense love for the art of war. [24]
Just as His age continues to increase,
Thus will He continue to garner the desire of waging war.
He will cause strife and fight fierce battles;
Countless enemies will die from His hands. [25]
The Lagna of the warrior is tremendous;
Into which, this benevolent child has been born.
Hundreds of thousands of enemies will lie as if asleep on the battlefield;
Such will be the battles fought by the hands of [this child]. [26]
He will have a great army for fighting in battle.
At the current moment, nobody like Him can be seen.
He will have an eminent glory, and will be the lover of war.
Like a pillar, He will firmly stand in place against enemies. [27]
In all four corners, His glory shall be prevalent.
With His command, He shall cause the destruction of many great enemies.
At that time He will accomplish what has not been done until now;
He will establish Dharma within the entire world. [28]
He will be merciful, munificent, a powerful warrior, and the upholder of patience.
With regards to knowledge, He shall be a learned scholar, and in battle, the destroyer of enemies. [29]
He will be a triumphant victor and quick-witted, with a big heart.
Among all beings in the world, He shall prevail superior, and be the moon of the Sodhi clan.” [30]
In this way, the astrologist spoke of many more virtues.
Kirpal Chand and the other Sikhs were very pleased.
They gave the Brahmin large sums of money;
A large, joyful celebration ensued. [31]
The congregation would arrive, in a very blissful state.
[Sikhs] would offer many types of gifts and donations.
The Sikhs who were residents of the city of Patna,
Would prepare and distribute Panchamrit. [32]
Along with their wives, they would arrive, wearing fine clothing;
[The Sikhs] gleamed, as if they were bolts of lightning amid clouds.
They celebrate the occasion with the singing of hymns.
Upon saying "Sri Nanak," they bow their heads in obeisance. [33]
Standing at the doorstep, they perform supplication.
Manifesting their desires in their mind, they prostrate upon the ground.
Just as the residents of the great city hear [the news],
Thus do they arrive in order to pay their salutations. [34]
Some bring gifts and donations, others bring Prasād;
Some bring offerings to give to the Satguru.
Many merchants and businessmen arrived together.
They presented various types of gifts. [35]
Those who embody a desire within their hearts, have their desire fulfilled.
Coming and going, along the way, they sing many great praises.
“Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur is perfect [in all ways].
His words are dauntless in giving boons or curses. [36]
He has displayed compassion toward many Sikhs;
He gives boons to all those with desires in their mind.
Within [the Guru’s] house, a prince has taken birth;
[Who will be] the supreme protector of the Sikhs. [37]
The Gurdev [Guru] is the upholder of all powers;
Who the deities wish to serve.
[The Guru] lends His aid within both of the Lokas.
His heart is tranquil and [He is] complete with every virtue. [38]
Embodying mercy, He has arrived within this country.
He hails from the Punjab, which, from here, is quite far.
[Yet,] He has resided within the city of Patna.
The exalted [Guru], [who is] a mound of virtues, has gratified us. [39]
[At this time,] He has gone abroad; as He returns to this country,
A glimpse of His face shall erase all of our sins.
The fate of our people has prospered greatly,
Which is why we have gotten the chance to serve the exalted Guru. [40]
Now, a son has been born into the house of the Satguru;
As if the austerities performed by the Sikhs have taken form.
Just as we perform service, and obtain contentment,
Thus do the beings of both Lokas obtain fulfillment. [41]
We shall have a glimpse [of the Guru] along with his son,
And have various types of our hindrances destroyed.”
In this way, the Sikhs in the city of Patna,
Express their admiration and praise their good fortune. [42]
As per regular routine, when morning arrives,
[The Sikhs] arrive at the door of the Guru's home and fold their hands [in reverence].
Upon paying their salutations, they continue their day of work.
As evening approaches, they pay salutations once more before heading to their homes. [43]
Hence concludes the twelfth chapter of the twelfth Raas. [12]
