ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

ਹਾੜ ੨੭ (July 11): The Inauguration of Miri-Piri.

After the martyrdom of Sri Guru Arjan Sahib Ji, "Guruship" was to be assigned to Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. The following is an excerpt from "Sri Gur Pratap Suraj Granth" of an eyewitness account of the "Gurgaddi" ceremony of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji:

ਬਹੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਕੋ ਲਗਯੌ ਦਿਵਾਨ। ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਧਿ ਬੈਠਹਿਂ ਬਿਚ ਆਨਿ।
ਸਾਲੋ ਆਦਿਕ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਮਸੰਦ। ਚਲਿ ਪਹੁਂਚੇ ਤਬਿ ਧਨੀ ਬਿਲੰਦ ।।੨੪।।
"The Guru's court held a great congregation.
Upon hearing the news, all the Sikhs join in.
Even the wealthiest of people had shown up."

ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਜਿਤਿਕ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਸਨੇਹਾਰੀ। ਆਇ ਸਭਿਨਿ ਅਭਿਬੰਦਨ ਧਾਰੀ।
ਜਬਹੁਂ ਸਕੇਲ ਮੇਲ ਬਡਿ ਹੋਵਾ। ਭਿੰਨਹਿ ਭਿੰਨ ਮਸੰਦਨਿ ਜੋਵਾ ।।੨੫।।
"All the townspeople had attended to do their prayers.
When the congregation had finished gathering together..."

ਸੇਲੀ ਮਾਲਾ ਮੰਜੀ ਲ੍ਯਾਇ। ਆਗੇ ਧਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੇ ਆਇ।
ਸਭਿ ਕੇ ਲਗੇ ਬਿਲੋਚਨ ਐਸੇ। ਚੰਦ ਚਕੋਰਹਿਂ ਚਿਤਵਿਤ ਜੈਸੇ ।।੨੬।।
"Then the Masands brought forth the seli-topi, rosary, and cot.
They presented all these items to the Guru.
Everybody began to stare at the Guru, like a partridge staring at the moon."

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਚੰਦ ਅਨੰਦੇ। ਤਿਨ ਪਿਖਿ ਮੁਸਕਾਵਤਿ ਮਂਦ ਮੰਦੇ।
ਬੁੱਢਾ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਥਿਰਯੋ ਨਿਹਾਰਾ। ਸਭਿ ਸੁਨਾਇ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਗ ਉਚਾਰਾ ।।੨੭।।
"Sri Guru Hargobind Ji is the bestower of bliss.
Upon looking at the items, they began to laugh.
Baba Budha Ji upon seeing this, recite the occurrence to the congregation."

'ਇਹ ਮਸੰਦ ਅਬਿ ਕ੍ਯਾ ਲੇ ਆਏ?। ਅਜਹੁਂ ਨ ਜਾਨਹਿਂ ਸਹਿਜ ਸੁਭਾਏ।
ਅਬਿ ਇਨ ਧਾਰਨਿ ਨਹਿਂ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਾ। ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਸਰੂਪ ਜਥਾ ਗੁਰ ਧਾਰਾ ।।੨੮।।
"Why have the Masands brought these items?
Have they not yet learned that these are of no use anymore?
Until now, the Guru Sahib's have kept a peaceful appearance."

ਤੁਰਕ ਰਾਜ ਭਏ ਦੁਸ਼ਟ ਬਿਸਾਲੇ। ਕ੍ਯਾ ਕੀਨਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪਿਤ ਨਾਲੇ।
ਲਿਯੋ ਚਹਹਿਂ ਪਲਟਾ ਤਤਕਾਲਾ। ਬਿਨਾ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਕ੍ਯੋਂ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਲਾ ।।੨੯।।
"But the Turkish rulers have become fiends.
Look at what they have done to my Satguru (father).
I must immediately take revenge!
How will this be accomplished without weapons?"

ਸੰਤਨਿ ਕੇਰਿ ਬਿਰੋਧੀ ਮਾਰੌਂ। ਗਹੌਂ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ , ਨਹਿਂ ਮਾਲਾ ਧਾਰੋਂ।
ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਹੁਤੇ ਛੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਹਿਪਾਲਾ। ਆਯੁਧ ਕੋ ਅੱਭ੍ਯਾਸ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ ।।੩੦।।
"I will kill the opponents of the saints, I will adorn weapons;
I will not adorn the rosary.
Before all the kings were Kshatriyas;
they practiced the martial arts."

ਤਜ੍ਯੋ ਜਬਹਿ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰਨਿ ਅੱਭ੍ਯਾਸ। ਲੀਨੋ ਤੁਰਕ ਰਾਜ ਨਿਜ ਪਾਸ।
 ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਿਦੇਸ਼ ਜੀਤ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨੇ। ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰਨਿ ਬਲ ਨਹਿਂ ਅਟਕਨਿ ਦੀਨੇ ।।੩੧।।
"Ever since they let go of their weapons,
the Turks have established their own empire.
They have conquered many nations, not letting anyone challenge them."

ਅਬਿ ਨਿਜ ਸਿੱਖਨਿ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਗਹਾਵੈਂ। ਬਿੱਦ੍ਯਾ ਕਰਿ ਅੱਭ੍ਯਾਸਹਿਂ ਪਾਵੈਂ।
ਸੰਘਰ ਘੋਰ ਕਰਹਿਂ, ਅਰਿ ਘਾਵੈਂ। ਗੁਰ ਸਹਾਇ ਬਡ ਰਾਜ ਕਮਾਵੈਂ ।।੩੨।।
"Now I will hand my Sikhs weapons, they shall practice Martial Arts.
They shall cause intense conflict, and kill the evildoers.
I shall assist my Sikhs in establishing their own empire."

ਸੁਨਿ ਬੋਲਯੋ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ। 'ਗੁਰ ਮਰਜੀ ਬਿਨ ਬਨਹਿ ਨ ਹੋਰਿ।
ਪੰਚ ਗੁਰੂ ਆਗੇ ਜਗ ਭਏ। ਜਥਾ ਗੀਤਿ ਪੂਰਬ ਨਿਰਮਏ ।।੩੩।।
"Upon hearing this Baba Budha Ji folds his hands and says,
'Nothing shall happen against the Gurus will.
The first five gurus have kept a peaceful motive."

ਤਥਾ ਮਸੰਦ ਆਪ ਢਿਗ ਲਯਾਏ। ਕਰਹੁ ਆਪ ਜੈਸੇ ਮਨ ਭਾਏ।
ਨੇਈ ਗੀਤਿ ਜੇ ਕਰਹੁ ਚਲਾਵਨਿ। ਧਰਹੁ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ ਗਨ ਦੁਸ਼ਟਨਿ ਘਾਵਨਿ ।।੩੪।।
"The Masands have brought you the items according to the first five gurus,
but you must only do what you please.
If you must start this new custom, then adorn weapons and destroy the evildoers."

ਜਿਮ ਰਾਵਰ ਕੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਹੋਇ। ਮਾਨਹਿ ਤਿਮ ਨੀਕੀ ਸਭਿ ਕੋਇ'।
ਸੁਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਿਧ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮੁਸਕਾਏ। ਸੇਲੀ ਮਾਲ ਮਸੰਦ ਜੁ ਲ੍ਯਾਏ ।।੩੫।।
"Everyone shall agree to your decision'.
Upon hearing Baba Budha Ji's words, the Satguru smiles.
Satguru folds his hands and prays to the seli and rosary and says..."

ਦ੍ਵੈ ਕਰ ਬੰਦਿ ਬੰਦਨਾ ਕਰੀ। ਕਹ੍ਯੋ 'ਕੋਸ਼ ਮਹਿਂ ਦਿਹੁ ਦਿਨ ਧਰੀ'।
ਕੋਸ਼ਪ ਹੁਕਮ ਮਾਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਕੇਰਾ। ਆਗੇ ਤੇ ਉਠਾਇ ਤੀਸ ਬੇਰਾ ।।੩੬।।
"Place these items in the treasury.
The treasurer follows the Guru's commands,
and picks up the items in front of the Guru..."

ਤੋਸ਼ੇ ਖਾਣੇ ਮਹਿਂ ਤਬਿ ਧਰੀ। ਉਠਿ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਧ ਪੁਨ ਕਰੀ।
ਪਾਂਚਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਲੇ ਨਾਮ। ਪਾਗ ਲੀਨਿ ਕਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਅਭਿਰਾਮ ।।੩੭।।
"And places them in the treasury.
Then Baba Budha Ji says an orison in the name of the five Gurus.
Then Baba Ji takes a beautiful turban in his hands.."

ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਛੋਰਨਿ ਜ਼ਰੀ ਬਿਸਾਲ। ਚਮਕੀਤ ਬਹੁ ਸੁਖਮਾ ਕੇ ਨਾਲ।
ਸੂਖਮ ਸੂਤ ਅਧਿਕ ਜਿਸ ਕੇਰਾ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਕੋ ਤਿਸ ਬੇਰਾ ।।੩੮।।
"Which had edges stitched from brocades,
and had an elegant sheen.
The turban was then given to Guru Hargobind Sahib."

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਧ ਬਂਧਵਾਵਨਿ ਕੀਨਿ। ਸ਼ੋਭਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਹੋਤਿ ਨਵੀਨ।
ਪੁਨ ਮੁਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਬਹੁ ਧਨ ਸਾਥ। ਅਰਪੀ ਪਾਗ ਦਾਤੁ ਲੇ ਹਾਥਿ ।।੩੯।।
"Then Baba Budha Ji themselves got a turban tied,
after which Baba Mohri Ji donated a large sum of money.
Then Baba Datu Ji also presented a turban."
