(April 24): The Birth of Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji
-
This date on the 'SGPC' Nanakshahi Calendar denotes the Bikrami Lunar date of 'Vaisakha Sudi Prathama,' which is recorded as the birth anniversary of the second Nanak; Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji, who were born into the 'Trehan' Kshatriya clan with the birth name of 'Lehna.' Upon hearing the hymns of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, they embodied great love for the Saṯigurū and traveled to Kartarpur Sahib to serve them and be in their holy presence. When the time came near for Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji's departure, Gurū Ji held many trials among their Sikhs to determine a viable successor to the throne. Bhai Lehna Ji's unconditional love for the Saṯigurū proved that it was only them who were truly fit to continue the 'Gurū' lineage. Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji would then embed their 'Jyoṯ' within Bhai Lehna Ji; installing them as their successor and renaming them to 'Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji.' As the second Nanak, Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji made quite a lot of advancements within the Sikh tradition. They were responsible for having organized the 'Gurmukhi' script which we now use as the main writing system for Gurbani. This script has also managed to become the most popular script for the Punjabi language in general. Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji are also known for encouraging Sikhs to pursue physical fitness, and for further enforcing the tradition of 'Langar,' which was started by Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Presented on this occasion, are translations of 'Mangals' or praises in regard of Srī Saṯigurū Angad Dev Ji from every 'Raas' of the 'Sri Gur Pratap Suraj Granth' as composed by Kavi Santokh Singh:
-
"Srī Gurū Angad Dev Ji are the remover of obstacles, and their 'Mukẖār-biʼnḏ' is the house of bliss.
With the refuge of their holy feet, I, Kavi Santokh Singh, salute them while prostrating to the ground."
"Like the pollen which grows on the lotus blossom, the dust from the feet of Gurū Angad Dev Ji is graceful.
Like fragrance resides in the lotus blossom, in the same way, glory resides in the feet of Gurū Angad Dev Ji.
The feet of Guru Angad Dev Ji and the lotus blossom are similar in that they both embody great tenderness.
Both Guru Angad Dev Ji and the lotus blossom are similar because they both express a form of detachment.
The lotus flower remains detached from the water in that it always remains at a higher height than the water.
Similarly, Gurū Ji remain detached from Māyā, as they remain at a higher height than the ocean of treasures.
The feet of the Gurū may be similar to a lotus, but unlike the lotus, the feet of Gurū Ji can grant liberation."

"Upon hearing their sermon, none must face any hindrances;
embodying the sermon in their heart, one obtains great bliss.
The son of Baba Pheru Ji are free and glorious in every way;
the grace of their eyes is greater than that of a lotus blossom.
Wherever they look, sins and evil in that direction are repelled;
ignorance is dispelled, like darkness being dispelled by the sun.
Gurū Angad Dev Ji are a cloud of bliss and the giver of salvation;
I, Kavi Santokh Singh, salute them and meditate on their name."
