The Return of the 'Bandi Chhorh' Guru

A painting depicting Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji's release from Gwalior fort, along with the fifty-two Rajput kings that were detained in the prison, who are holding the edge of the Guru's cloak, as per Emperor Jahangir's scheme.

This date on the standard "Bikrami" lunar calendar marks the auspicious night of Diwali, which is a very prominent occasion within the Hindu Dharma; signifying the return of Lord Rama after defeating the demon king Ravana in the Treta Yuga. Diwali (or Deepavali) is generally celebrated by illuminating one's house or place of worship with candles, to signify the victory of light over darkness. Although orthodox Sikhs have always celebrated Diwali in a similar way, This festival holds a different significance in Sikhi; marking the day Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji (The Sixth Nanak) were released from Gwalior Fort along with fifty-two Hindu Kings, who had been unfairly contained in Emperor Jahangir's captivity. From that point onwards, this event was associated with the festival of Diwali itself. The "Sri Gur Pratap Suraj Granth" of Kavi Santokh Singh Ji describes this very event in detail:

The 'Bandi Chhorh' (Liberator) Guru Arrives at Delhi"

ਦੋਹਰਾ:

ਰਿਦੇ ਬਿਚਾਰਤਿ ਸੁਮਤਿ ਤੇ ਜਹਾਂਗੀਰ ਪਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੁ।

ਲੇ ਨਿਕਸਹਿਂ ਗੁਰੁ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਿਤਿਕ ਰਹੈਂ ਅਪਰ ਗਢ ਮਾਂਹੁ॥੧॥

"The Emperor, Jahangir thinks with his great wit;

that the Guru will be freed with only a few kings,

while the rest will remain in binds."

ਚੌਪਈ:

ਚਿਤਵਤਿ ਜਤਨ ਸ਼ਾਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਂਹੂ। ਹੁਇ ਆਗਵਨਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਮ ਪਾਹੂ।

ਦਰਸੌਂ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਨਿਸੰਸੈ ਨਾਸੌਂ। ਨਿਸਾ ਬਿਖੈ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ਹੁਲਾਸੌਂ ॥੨॥

"The Emperor proceeds to think to himself,

that with all means must the Guru come meet him.

He thinks that only by having a glimpse of the Guru,

will he be able to sleep peacefully at night."

ਕਿਤਿਕ ਕਾਲ ਮਹਿਂ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਬਖਾਨੀ। 'ਸੁਨਹੁ ਵਜ਼ੀਰਖਾਨ ! ਹਿਤ ਠਾਨੀ।

ਕਰਹੁ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਗਾਰੀ। ਦਿਹੁ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੋ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੩॥

"After some time he makes a clever scheme:

'O Wazir Khan! Supplicate to the Guru,

that they gracefully pay me a visit."

ਜੇਤਿਕ ਤੁਮਰੇ ਦਾਮਨ ਸਾਥ। ਗਹਿਨਿ ਕਰਹਿਂ, ਆਨਹੁ ਨਰ ਨਾਥ।

ਤਿਨ ਪਰ ਸਫਲਹਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ। ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਦਾਨ ਦੀਨਸਿ ਉਪਕਾਰੀ ॥੪॥

"Thou may bringest as many kings,

that can hold on to the fringe of thy dress.

May thy grace be fruitful upon them,

and they achieve your philanthropy."

ਗੁਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੁਇ ਕਰਿ ਚਲਿ ਆਇਂ। ਕਹੋ ਤਥਾ ਸ਼ੁਭਿ ਮਤਿ ਉਪਜਾਇ।

ਪਹੁੰਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ,ਨਹੀਂ ਬਿਦਤਾਵਹੁ। ਕੁਛ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੰਗ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਿਕਸਾਵਹੁ ॥੫॥

"Give the Guru this message in such a way,

that they come to visit us with please.

Reach Gwalior without spreading the word,

and release the Guru along with some kings."

ਤੁਰਤ ਚਢਾਇ ਇਹਾਂ ਲੈ ਆਵਹੁ। ਸਨਮਾਨਤਿ ਆਨੰਦ ਉਪਜਾਵਹੁ'।

ਸੁਨਿ ਵਜ਼ੀਰ ਖਾਂ ਕਰੀ ਸਲਾਮ। ਚਢਿ ਕਰਿ ਚਲਯੋ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਅਭਿਰਾਮ ॥੬॥

"Briskly bringest the Guru to me,

and thou shalt be awarded with esteem.'

Upon hearing this, Wazir Khan gives his salutations;

he mounts himself on a beautiful steed."

ਤੂਰਨ ਗਮਨਯੋ ਪਹੁੰਚਯੋ ਜਾਈ। ਉਤਰਯੋ ਵਹਿਰ ਦੁਰਗ ਅਗਵਾਈ।

ਜਲ ਸੋਂ ਕਰ ਪਦ ਬਦਨ ਪਖਾਰੇ। ਭਯੋ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਸੁ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਧਾਰੇ ॥੭॥

"Swiftly, he arrives at Gwalior fort,

and dismounts his horse outside the fort.

He cleans his hands and face with water,

and fixes his garments to sanctify himself."

ਗਯੋ ਨੰਮ੍ਰਿ ਹੁਇ ਗੁਰ ਅਗਵਾਈ। ਕਰ ਜੋਰਤਿ ਪਗ ਪਰਸੇ ਜਾਈ।

'ਉਠਹੁ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ !। ਲੇਹੁ ਸੰਗ ਕੈਦੀ ਮਹਿਪਾਲਾ ॥੮॥

"He approaches the true Guru in earnest,

and bows down to their lotus feet and says:

'Arise, O sustainer of the poor!

Bringest the imprisoned kings with thee."

ਜੋ ਦਾਮਨ ਗਹਿ ਲੇਹਿਂ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ। ਬੰਦ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਸੋ ਹੁਇਂ ਸਾਰੇ।

ਹੁਤੇ ਦੁਰਗ ਕੇ ਜੇ ਦਰਵਾਨ। ਹੁਕਮ ਸ਼ਾਹੁ ਕੋ ਦਿਯੋ ਬਖਾਨ ॥੯॥

"May those who can hold the edge of thy cloak,

be liberated from their bondage by thee.'

The said message was then given,

to the gatekeeper of the fort."

ਕੈਦੀ ਮਹਿਪਾਲਕ ਜੇ ਅਹੈਂ। ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਕੇ ਦਾਮਨਿ ਗਹੈਂ।

ਸੋ ਸਭਿ ਦੁਰਗ ਨਿਕਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਇਂ। ਪਗ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਕਟਾਇ ॥੧੦॥

"Any imprisoned kings who hold on to the cloak of the true Guru,

may all exit the fort, and the ties on their feet will be cut."

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਹਰਿਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਗੁਸਾਈਂ। ਲਖਿ ਕਰਿ ਤੁਰਕੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਚਤਰਾਈ।

ਚਢਨਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਨਿਜ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਗਾਏ। ਦੌਰਤਿ ਦਾਸ ਸਕਲ ਲੇ ਆਏ ॥੧੧॥

"The true master, Sri Guru Hargobind Ji observe the Turk Emperor's cleverness;

they order new garments to be made, as the servants hurry to fulfill the request."

ਅਰੁਣ ਬਰਣ ਚੀਰਾ ਸਿਰ ਚਾਰੂ। ਜੁਗ ਛੋਰਨਿ ਕੈ ਜ਼ਰੀ ਉਦਾਰੂ।

ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪੇਚ ਲਾਇ ਸੋ ਸਾਜਾ। ਮੁਖ ਮੰਡਲ ਤਬਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਬਿਰਾਜਾ ॥੧੨॥

"Upon their head was tied, a beautiful red-colored turban;

the edges of this turban were stitched with beautiful brocade.

The turban was charmingly decorated with fine ornaments;

at that time, the face of the Guru gleamed with beauty and elegance."

ਜਾਮਾ ਪਹਿਰਯੋ ਚਾਰੁ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ। ਬਨੇ ਪਚਾਸ ਜਾਸ ਕੇ ਪਾਲਾ।

ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬੰਦ ਸੁ ਦੁੰਦ ਬਿਲੰਦੇ। ਆਯੁਤ ਉਰ ਪਰ ਲਮਕ ਸੁਹੰਦੇ ॥੧੩॥

"Guru Ji wear a large exquisite robe, which was designed with fifty fringes.

The tassels of this dress looked beautiful draping down the Satguru's knees."

ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਜਿਗਾ ਜ਼ੇਬ ਜਿਸ ਜ਼ਾਹਰ। ਜਬਰ ਅਜਾਇਬ ਜਰੇ ਜਵਾਹਰ।

ਕੁੰਡਲ ਕਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਕੰਕਨ। ਆਂਖਿ ਬਿਸਾਲ ਬਿਲੋਕਨਿ ਬੰਕਨ ॥੧੪॥

"A royal plume decorated on their head shone very brightly;

as it was studded with various gems and stones.

In their ears were rings, and on their wrists were bracelets;

the gaze of their beautiful eyes was graceful."

ਜਥਾ ਸੁੰਡ ਭੁਜਦੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡੇ। ਨਵਰਤਨੇ ਅੰਗਦ ਜਹਿਂ ਮੰਡੇ।

ਗਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਮਾਲ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ। ਬਿਚ ਬਿਚ ਹੀਰਨਿ ਜਾਲਨਿ ਝਾਲਾ ॥੧੫॥

"Their arms as long as an elephants trunk,

and jewels decorating each limb of their body.

A necklace of pearls around their neck,

with studded jewels shining within the pearls."

ਜਰੇ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਛਾਪ ਛਲਾਇਨ। ਸ਼ੋਭਤਿ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਸਰੂਪ ਛਬਿ ਆਇਨ।

ਲੇ ਬਹੁ ਮੋਲਾ ਲਲਿਤ ਦੁਕੂਲ। ਜ਼ਰੀ ਜੁਕਤਿ ਸ਼ੋਭਤਿ ਭੁਜ ਮੂਲ ॥੧੬॥

"The Guru's stamp ring was studded with red jewels;

as a brocade-stitched scarf sat atop their shoulders."

ਗਹਿ ਦੀਰਘ ਪਹਿਰੀ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੇਰ। ਬਲੀ ਬਿਸਾਲ ਸੁਭਤਿ ਸਮ ਸ਼ੇਰ।

ਜਾਂਬੂਨਦ ਕੇ ਫੂਲ ਲਗਾਏ। ਬਾਂਧਿ ਲਈ ਅਸ ਢਾਲ ਸੁਹਾਏ ॥੧੭॥

"They arm themselves with a large 'Tulwar' sword;

the potent Guru appear as mighty as a lion.

Their dress is decorated with golden flowers,

as a shield tied to their waist looked striking."

ਕੰਚਨ ਮਹਿਂ ਜਰਾਉ ਜਰਵਾਯੋ। ਅਸ ਨਿਖੰਗ ਕਟ ਸੰਗ ਲਗਾਯੋ।

ਧਨੁਖ ਕਠੋਰ ਹਾਥ ਮਹਿਂ ਗਹਯੋ। ਪਨਹੀ ਪਾਇ ਚਲਨਿ ਕੋ ਚਹਯੋ ॥੧੮॥

"Arrows embedded with gold are in a quiver hanging from their back.

They hold a strong bow in their hand, as they begin to put on their shoes."

ਸੁਨਿ ਪਿਖਿ ਕੈ ਕੈਦੀ ਮਹਿਪਾਲ। ਹਰਖਤਿ ਸਭਿ ਆਏ ਤਤਕਾਲ।

ਦੀਨ ਮਲੀਨ, ਕੁਢਾਲ, ਕਰਾਲੇ। ਬਹੁ ਗਰੂਏ ਪਗ ਬੰਧਨ ਡਾਲੇ ॥੧੯॥

"The imprisoned kings are amazed by this sight and quickly approach the Guru.

The prisoners are meek, filthy, and clumsy, and their feet are tied in chains."

ਦੇਖਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਹਯੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ। 'ਇਕ ਦਾਮਨ ਗਹਿ ਇਕ ਮਹਿਪਾਲ'।

ਉਤਲਾਵਤਿ ਜਬਿ ਪਕਰਨਿ ਧਾਏ। ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਦੇ ਧੀਰ ਗਹਾਏ ॥੨੦॥

"The Guru sees them and gracefully says:

'May each king hold on to one of my fringes'.

When all the kings hurried to grab a tassel,

then with serenity, one by one,

the Guru hands each king a part of their cloak."

ਜਾਮੇ ਕੇ ਪਚਾਸ ਥੇ ਪਾਲੇ। ਗਹੇ ਪਚਾਸਨਿ ਹੀ ਮਹਿਪਾਲੇ।

ਦੋ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੈਦੀ ਤਬਿ ਰਹੇ। ਅਪਰ ਸਰਬ ਨੇ ਦਾਮਨ ਗਹੇ ॥੨੧॥

"The cloak contains fifty fringes, which fifty kings held on to.

Still, two kings remained, while the others managed to hold on."

ਸੋ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਮਹਾਂ ਘਿਘਿਆਏ। 'ਹਮਹੁਂ ਨ ਤਯਾਗੇ ਜਾਹੁ ਇਥਾਏਂ'।

ਨਿਕਟਿ ਹਤਿ ਕੋ  ਹਟਕ ਸਿਪਾਹੀ-'ਗਹਹੁ ਕਹਾਂ ? ਛੂਛੋ ਅਬਿ ਨਾਂਹੀ ॥੨੨॥

"Begging to the Guru they began to cry:

'Please do not leave us here.'

On coming near, the sepoys stopped them.

'What will you hold? No tassles remain'."

ਜਾਮੇ ਕੇ ਪਚਾਸ ਹੀ ਪਾਲੇ। ਗਹੇ ਪਚਾਸ ਭੁਵਾਲ ਬਿਸਾਲੇ।

ਅਧਿਕ ਭੀਰ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੇਰ ਸਮੀਪ। ਖਸਿ ਆਪਸ ਮਹਿਂ ਥਿਰੇ ਮਹੀਪ ॥੨੩॥

"As the robe only has fifty tassles, fifty kings have held on to them.

There was already a great crowd around the Guru."

ਤੁਮਰੀ ਪਰਾਲਬਧ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਵਹੁ। ਹਟਹੁ ਪਿਛਾਰੀ ਨਿਕਟ ਨ ਜਾਵਹੁ'।

ਦੋਨਹੁ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤਬਿ ਊਚ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ। 'ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਦਾਨ ਦਿਹੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੨੪॥

"'It is within your fate to suffer, so stay back and don't come near!'

Both the kings begin to lament to the Guru:

'O Guru Ji ! bestow your blessings upon us."

ਤੁਮਰੇ ਬਿਨ ਕੋ ਰੱਖਯਕ ਨਾਂਹੀ। ਆਨਿ ਛੁਟਾਇ ਕੈਦ ਜੇ ਮਾਂਹੀ।

ਹਮ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੇ ਤੁਮ ਹੋ ਨਾਥ। ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਲੀਜਹਿ ਨਿਜ ਸਾਥ' ॥੨੫॥

"Thou art our only saviour, who can free us from our bondage.

Thou art the lord of the lordless; with benevolence, take us as well'."

ਦੇਖਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖਿਆਰੇ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਹਿ ਊਚ ਹਕਾਰੇ।

'ਦੁਇ ਜਾਮੇ ਕੇ ਬੰਦ ਹਮਾਰੇ। ਆਇ ਗਹੋ ਨਿਜ ਹਾਥ ਮਝਾਰੇ' ॥੨੬॥

"When the benevolent Guru saw the meek and hopeless,

They speak in their loud, strong voice:

'My cloak has two long sleeves draping down;

Come and each hold one with your hands'."

ਸੁਨਤਿ ਨਰਿੰਦ ਅਨੰਦ ਬਿਲੰਦੇ। ਆਏ ਦੁੰਦ ਦੌਰਿ ਗਹਿ ਬੰਦੇ।

ਕਰਿ ਛੂਛੋ ਸਭਿ ਬੰਦੀਖਾਨਾ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਚਾਹਤਿ ਭੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਥਾਨਾ ॥੨੭॥

"The two kings feel contented on the Guru's sweet words;

they both quickly run over to the Guru and grab a sleeve.

Guru Ji only get ready to take leave,

once the entire prison has been emptied."

ਜਹਿਂ ਕਹਿਂ ਸੁਧਿ ਲੋਕਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਈ। ਹਿਤ ਦੇਖਨਿ ਕੇ ਆਵਤਿ ਧਾਈ।

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੰਗ ਸਕਲ ਮਹਿਪਾਲਾ। ਨਿਕਸਤਿ ਦੁਰਗ ਗਹੇ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਲਾ ॥੨੮॥

"Wherever people hear of this news,

they leave their work and hurry to go see.

All the kings hold on to the cloak of Sri Guru Hargobind Ji,

as they step out of the prison to be released."

'ਧੰਨਯ ਧੰਨਯ ਗੁਰ ਬਡਿ ਉਪਕਾਰੀ। ਕਯੋਂ ਨ ਗਹੈਂ ਨਰ ਸ਼ਰਨਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ।

ਜੀਵਤਿ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਸਦਾ ਰਖਵਾਰੇ। ਦੇਤਿ ਅਨੰਦ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਨਿਰਵਾਰੇ' ॥੨੯॥

"'Hail, Hail the benevolent Guru, why should we not hold on to thy feet?

Thou art the protector of the living and dead, who erases pain and bestows bliss'."

ਆਵਤਿ ਦੇਖਨਿ ਨਰ ਗਨ ਦੌਰਿ। ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਨਿਕਸੇ ਪੌਰ।

ਹਾਥ ਬੰਦਿ ਸਭਿ ਬੰਦਨ ਠਾਨਿ। ਮਾਨਵ ਗੁਨਹਿਂ ਸੁ ਮਨ ਅਨੁਮਾਨ ॥੩੦॥

"People from far come running to see, as Guru Ji slowly exit the gate.

Everyone grasp their hands in devotion, and focus upon their mind."

ਕਬਿੱਤ:

ਸੰਕਟ ਨਰਕ ਕੋ ਬਿਕਟ ਜੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਲਾਪ ਜੈਸੇ, ਨਿਕਸੇ ਨਿਸੰਗ ਸੰਗ ਜਨਕ ਨਰਿੰਦ ਕੇ।

ਕੈਧੋਂ ਉਡ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਕਰਿ ਓਜ ਕੋ ਬਿਲੰਦ ਰਾਹੁ ਰੋਕੇ ਛੁਟਿ ਚਲੇ ਸਾਥ ਪੂਰਨ ਸੁ ਚੰਦ ਕੇ।

ਕੈਧੋਂ ਘੇਰਿ ਆਨੀਂ ਨਾਰਿ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਮਹਾਂਨੀ,ਦੇਂਤ ਹਾਂਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨਿ,ਪਾਛੇ ਗਮਨੀ ਗੁਬਿੰਦ ਕੇ।

ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਮਨਿੰਦ ਆਜ ਸ਼ੋਭਤਿ ਮੁਕੰਦ ਮਹਾਂ ਨਿਕਸੇ ਨਰਿੰਦ ਸੰਗ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕੇ ॥੩੧॥

"Like the wailing souls facing the perils of hell, gracefully escaped with Raja Janak;

and the stars stopped by Rahu, are freed using the potency of the full moon.

Like the innocent women captured by demons, were rescued by Lord Krishna;

In the same way, the savior, Sri Guru Hargobind Ji, have liberated all the kings from the prison."

ਕੈਧੋਂ ਜਰਾਸਿੰਧੁ ਨੇ ਨਰਿੰਦ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਕੈਦਿ ਕਰੇ ਗਮਨੇ ਅਰਿੰਦ ਸੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨੇ ਛੁਡਾਇ ਦੀਨਿ।

ਕੈਧੋਂ ਰਾਖਸ਼ਿੰਦ੍ਰ ਗਹਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਸਮੇਤ ਸੁਰ, ਰਾਮਚੰਦ ਜਾਇ ਗਢਿ ਲੰਕ ਨਿਕਸਾਇ ਦੀਨਿ।

ਬਲੀ ਜਯੋਂ ਪਾਰਸ ਨਾਥ ਰੋਕੇ ਨਰਨਾਥ ਜੀਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਮਛਿੰਦ੍ਰਨਾਥ ਸਭਿ ਮੁਕਤਾਇ ਦੀਨਿ।

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਬਿੰਦ ਆਜ ਤਿਨਹੁੰਕੇ ਮਨਿੰਦ ਕੀਨਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੇ ਮਹੇਂਦ੍ਰਨਿ ਕੋ ਦੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਬਚਾਇ ਦੀਨਿ ॥੩੨॥

"When Jarasandha had captured countless kings, then upon coming back from Dwarika,

Bhima and Arjuna went to his capital and killed all their enemies, whilst freeing the kings.

Like Lord Krishna brought the kings back out of Jarasandha's prison;

In the same way, Sri Hargobind Ji, brought the Rajput kings out of Gwalior prison.

When the demon king Ravana, along with Indra, had captured multiple deities,

then Lord Ramachandra rescued the gods and goddesses and exited Lanka.

Like Matsyendra freed the subdued kings from the captivity of Parasnatha;

Sri Hargobind Ji, have done the same, and freed the kings from pain and suffering."

ਸ੍ਵੈਯਾ:

ਜੂੰਕ ਪਰੀ, ਬਹੁ ਬਾਰ ਬਧੇ, ਸਿਰ ਰੂਖੇ ਬਡੇ ਨ ਲਹੀ ਚਿਕਨਾਈ।

ਜੀਰਨ ਚੀਰ ਮਲੀਨ ਫਟੇ, ਤਨ ਛਾਦਿਨ ਭੀ ਨਹਿਂ ਹੋਹਿ ਸਬਾਈ।

ਬੰਧਨ ਭਾਰ ਧਰੇ ਬਹੁ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਮੰਦ ਹੀ ਮੰਦ ਚਲਯੋ ਜਿਨ ਜਾਈ।

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਧੀਰ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਹੁ ਕੌਨ ਕਰੈ ਦੁਖ ਤੇ ਛੁਟਕਾਈ ॥੩੩॥

"The kings' heads were full of lice, their hair were outgrown, and no hair oil was available.

Their clothes were old, soiled, and torn; they couldn't even properly cover themselves.

As their feet were tied in metal chains, they did not have even the freedom to walk.

Who can free these people from suffering, other than the serene Sri Hargobind Sahib Ji?"

ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਕੋ ਰਾਜ ਖੁਸਯੋ ਸੁਤ ਭਾਰਜਾ ਆਦਿ ਹਿਤੂ ਨਹਿਂ ਪਾਸੀ।

ਦੀਹ ਮਹਾਂ ਦੁਰਗੇਯ ਬਡੋ ਦਿਢ, ਜਾਇ ਨ ਕੋ ਗਢ ਮੈਂ ਬਲਰਾਸੀ।

ਹੀਨ ਉਪਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਇ ਜੁ ਛੂਟਨਿ ਤੇ ਨਿਤ ਧਾਰਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੀ।

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਧੀਰ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਹੁ ਕੌਨ ਕਰੈ ਅਸ ਬੰਦ ਖਲਾਸੀ ॥੩੪॥

"As the kingdoms of the world had fallen,

the (Gwalior) fort stood strong and immovable.

Not even the mightiest of warriors,

would dare to step foot into the fort.

As everyone suffered in pain with the desire to be saved,

hopelessness had manifested within the hearts of the people.

Without the grace of Sri Hargobind Sahib Ji,

who would free the people from bondage?"

ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਿਦੇਸ਼ਨਿ ਜੀਤਿ ਭਲੇ ਇਕ ਰਾਜ ਭਯੋ ਬਡਿ ਤੇਜ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ੀ।

ਨਾਂਹਿ ਰਹਯੋ ਅਵਨੀਤਲ ਕੋ ਅਸ, ਜੋ ਰਣ ਠਾਨਿ ਕਰੈ ਬਲ ਨਾਸ਼ੀ।

ਦੀਹ ਵਧਯੋ ਤੁਰਕੇਸ਼ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਗਹੇ ਰਿਪੁ ਤਾਂਹਿ ਨ ਛੋਰਨਿ ਆਸੀ।

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਧੀਰ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਹੁ ਕੌਨ ਕਰੈ ਅਸ ਬੰਦ ਖਲਾਸੀ ॥੩੫॥

"After conquering countless territories, Jahangir had created his vast kingdom.

There was nobody on this earthly plain who could compete with them in battle.

The Turks had greatly grown in power; so they captured the enemy kings.

Without the fortitude of Sri Hargobind Ji, who would've freed them from bondage?"

ਦੌਹਰਾ:

ਪਰਵਾਰਤਿ ਖਸਿ ਫਸ ਮਹਾਂ ਮਹੀਪਾਲ ਤਿਸ ਕਾਲ।

ਦੁਰਗ ਪੌਰ ਨਿਕਸੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੌਤਕ ਹੋਤਿ ਬਿਸਾਲ ॥੩੬॥

"Away from their families, the kings were stuck in a difficult predicament.

When Guru Ji step out of the gate, a wondrous miracle ensued."

ਚੌਪਈ:

ਲੋਕ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਹੁਂ ਹੇਰਨਿ ਹੇਤ। ਮਿਲੇ ਆਇ ਹੁਇ ਸ਼ੀਘ੍ਰ ਸਮੇਤ।

ਭਈ ਦੂਰ ਲਗਿ ਪੰਗਤਿ ਖਰੀ। ਗੁਰੁ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਲੇ ਬੰਦਨ ਕਰੀ ॥੩੭॥

"Thousands of people had come to see, as they all hurry to meet the Guru.

They pray in devotion upon catching a glimpse of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji."

ਉਚਰਹਿਂ ਸੁਜਸੁ ਮਹਾਂ ਤਿਸ ਕਾਲਾ। ਬੰਦ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਜਾਨਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ।

'ਤੁਮ ਬਿਨ ਕੌਨ ਕਰੇ ਅਸ ਕਾਜ। ਬਿਰਦ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜ' ॥੩੮॥

"As they say praises of the Guru's transcendent glory, all the kings acknowledge their release.

'Who can complete such a task other than thee? O sustainer Guru, thou hast recognized thy duty'."

ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਭੂਖਣ ਸ਼ਸਤੁ ਸਜੰਤੇ। ਡੀਲ ਬਿਸਾਲ ਚਲਤਿ ਦੁਤਿਵੰਤੇ।

ਨਿਕਸਿ ਦੁਰਗ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਖਰੇ। ਤਬਹਿ ਲੁਹਾਰ ਹਕਾਰਨਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੩੯॥

"They are dazzling in jewellery and weaponry, and sport a strongly built figure.

They walk outside the fort and stop, as they call forth the blacksmiths."

ਸਭਿ ਕੇ ਪਗ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਟਵਾਏ। ਹੁਇ ਨਿਰਬੰਧ ਮਹਿਪ ਹਰਖਾਏ।

ਜਿਮ ਸਿੱਖਨਿ ਪਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੈਂ। ਕਰਮ ਬੰਧ ਤਤਛਿਨ ਕਟ ਡਾਰੈਂ ॥੪੦॥

"All the kings have the chains on their feet cut open; free from bondage they feel elated,

in the same way the bonds of Karma are cut from Sikhs who are blessed with the Guru's grace."

ਤਿਮ ਲੋਕਨਿ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਂਤਿ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ। ਜੋ ਚਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸ਼ਰਨੀ ਆਯੋ।

ਸੋ ਨਿਰਬੰਧਨ ਹੁਇ ਮੁਦ ਪਾਵੈ। ਬੱਧਯਤਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥੪੧॥

"This event acts as a metaphor for Sikhs:

'Whoever follows the feet of the Satguru,

is freed from bondage and achieves contentment.

After this, no bondage is ever inflicted on the Guru's Sikhs'."

ਦੇਖਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨਿਧਿ ਕੀ ਬਡਿਆਈ। ਤਬਿ ਹਰਿਦਾਸ ਮੋਦ ਉਰ ਪਾਈ।

'ਰਹੌਂ ਸੰਗ ਮੈਂ ਨਾਂਹਿ ਨ ਤਯਾਗੌਂ। ਸਫਲ ਜਨਮ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਗੋ' ॥੪੨॥

"On seeing the glory of the graceful Guru, jailer Haridas feels contented.

He says: 'I will always stay with thee, I will never leave thy side!

By serving the Guru, I will put my time on this earth to use'."

ਪਾਧੜੀ ਛੰਦ:

ਹਰਿਦਾਸ ਹੇਰਿ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਨਿਧਾਨ। ਚਿਤ ਚਹਤਿ ਦਿਯੋ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਹਾਨ।

ਤਬਿ ਕਹਯੋ 'ਜਿਤਿਕ ਕੈਦੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ। ਸਭਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਸੰਗ ਅਬਿ ਪੰਥ ਚਾਲ ॥੪੩॥

"The Guru, bestower of grace, bless jailer Haridas and say:

'Walk the path along with as many kings that are present here."

ਹਮ ਤੇ ਸੁ ਜਦੋ ਹੁਇ ਕਰਿ ਪਯਾਨ। ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸਨੇ ਸਨੇ ਚਲਿ ਹੈਂ ਮਹਾਨ।

ਹਮ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਸ਼ੀਘ੍ਰਤਾ ਮਗ ਬਿਸਾਲ। ਉਰ ਸ਼ਾਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਖਤਿ ਬਿਤਿਯ ਕਾਲ' ॥੪੪॥

"We shall travel at a different pace, the kings shall walk slowly, with ease.

We must arrive very quickly; the Emperor has been waiting for us'."

ਇਮ ਕਹਯੋ ਪੁਨਹ ਕੀਨੋ ਪਯਾਨ। ਚਢਿ ਕਰਿ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਮਹਾਨ।

ਤਬਿ ਖਾਂ ਵਜ਼ੀਰ ਨਿਜ ਸੰਗ ਲੀਨਿ। ਮੁਖ ਕਰਤਿ ਬਾਰਤਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨਿ ॥੪੫॥

"Upon saying this, Guru Ji mount themselves on a fast-paced horse;

They take Wazir Khan along with them, as they make their way to the Emperor."

ਸਭਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਆਦਿ ਜੇਠੇ ਅਨੰਦ। ਗਮਨੇ ਸੁ ਲਾਰਿ ਕੁਲ ਸੋਢਿ ਚੰਦ।

ਧਰਿ ਸ਼ਸਤ੍ਰ  ਸ਼ੁਭਤਿ ਜਿਮ ਮਹਿਦ ਸਿੰਘ। ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ਜਾਤਿ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸਿੰਘ ॥੪੬॥

"All the Sikhs and Jethas are blissful and contented;

They decide to travel with the 'Sodhi Patshah' as well.

Guru Ji, adorned with weapons, resemble a mighty lion.

I, Kavi Santokh Singh, am a sacrifice to the true Guru."

ਅਬਿ ਰਾਸਿ ਚਤੁਰਥੀ ਪੂਰਿ ਕੀਨਿ। ਗੁਰੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਉੱਦਮ ਸੁ ਦੀਨਿ।

ਸੁੰਦਰ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਕੀਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼। ਜਿਸ ਪਠਤਿ ਸੁਨਤਿ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਪ ਨਾਸ਼ ॥੪੭॥

"Now the Fourth 'Raas' has been completed;

the Guru has manifested grace and bestowed this endeavor.

The beautiful personality of the Guru has been made enlightened.

Whoever will read or listen to this, shall be freed from all sin."
