ਮਾਘ ੨੫ (February 7): The Birth of Sri Guru Har Rai Ji
-
Today's date on the 'SGPC' Nanakshahi Calendar marks the birth anniversary of the seventh Nanak, Sri Guru Har Rai Ji; who are known for having continued the Sikh martial tradition started by the sixth Nanak, Sri Guru Hargobind Ji. Guru Har Rai Ji maintained a large army consisting of more than two thousand soldiers. They were also prominent for being greatly compassionate, especially towards plants, wildlife, and nature in general; their compassion being known to have been sparked after an occurence when they realized the suffering caused to some plants after being destroyed by their robe as a child. Presented on this occassion, are translations of 'Mangals' or praises in regard of Srī Saṯigurū Har Rai Ji from every 'Raas' of the 'Sri Gur Pratap Suraj Granth' as composed by Kavi Santokh Singh:

ਦੋਹਰਾ:
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਰਿਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਨਾਇ ਧਯਾਇ ਅਘ ਜਾਇਂ
ਕਰਿ ਪਦ ਪਰ ਪਰਣਾਮ ਕੋ ਜਿਹ ਤੇ ਨਿਧਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਆਇ ॥੧੭॥
"Upon meditating on the name of Srī Saṯigurū Har Rai Ji, all sins are repelled;
saluting their all-superior feet, are the nine Niḏẖīs and eighteen Siḏẖīs obtained."
ਸ੍ਵੈਯਾ:
ਪੰਕ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਸਤਾ ਰਸ ਮੈਂ ਰਸ ਊਰਧ ਕੋ ਨਿਸਰਾ ਸਰਸੇਰੋ।
ਗ੍ਰੀਵ ਲੌ ਨੀਰ ਮੈਂ ਧੀਰ ਧਰੇ ਇਕ ਪੈਰ ਖਰੋ ਥਿਰ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਰਵਿ ਹੇਰੋ।
ਆਤਪ ਸੀਤ ਸਹੈ ਬਰਖਾ ਤਪ ਸਾਧਤਿ ਯਾ ਬਿਧਿ ਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਘਨੇਰੋ।
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਪਾਇ ਸਮਾਨਤਾ ਪਾਇ ਨ ਕੰਜ ਉਪਾਇ ਬਤੇਰੋ ॥੧੮॥
"The lotus flower sprouts in the mud; it grows in the water, then blooms above it.
In fortitude, immersed in water up to its neck, it stands on one foot, facing the sun.
Whilst standing, it tolerates the heat, cold, and rain, and follows very harsh devotion.
Although it wishes to do so, the lotus flower cannot compare to the feet of Srī Har Rai."

ਤਾਰਾ ਭਵੋਦਧਿ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਕੋ ਗਨ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸੇਤੁ ਕਰੀ ਬਿਸਤਾਰਾ।
ਤਾਰਾ ਮਲੇਛਨ ਕੇ ਮਤ ਕੋ ਉਦਿਤੇ ਦਿਨਨਾਥ ਜਥਾ ਨਿਸ ਤਾਰਾ।
ਤਾਰਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੈ ਖੋਲਤਿ, ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਰਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੧੪॥
"They who eradicate the worries of those who get a glimpse of their eyes;
simply by observing them keenly, the poison of their evil and sin is repelled.
Using the bridge of Kīrṯan, they guide their servants over the world-ocean;
they rebuke the doctrine of the barbarians, as if the sun repelling the stars.
By giving them sermons, they open the locks of the hearts of their servants;
in this way, Srī Gurū Har Rai Ji carry out the emancipation of their servants."

The benevolent Srī Har Rai made them kings."

they who ward off lust, anger, and the rest of the five vices;

ਸ੍ਵੈਯਾ:
ਦੇਵ ਤਰੋਵਰ ਹੈ ਨ ਇਹੈ, ਹਰਿਰਾਇ ਗੁਰੂ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਵ ਤਰੋਵਰ।
ਸੋ ਸੁਰ ਧੇਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਨ ਜਾਨਿਯੇ, ਸੇਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁਰ ਧੇਨੁ ਲਹੈ ਨਰ।
ਹੈ ਨ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣਿ ਬੂਝ ਜਿ ਦੇਖਿਯੇ, ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੇ ਨਖ ਚਿੰਤਮਣੀ ਬਰ।
ਸੋ ਨ ਸੁਧਾ ਮਧੁਰਾਇ ਕੋ ਧਾਰਤਿ, ਗਯਾਨ ਗਿਰਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਮਧੁਰੀਤਰ ॥੯॥
"The Kalpavriksha tree which is only in paradise,
Gurū Har Rai Ji can make that Kalpavriksha on earth.
Consider the Kamdhenu cow which is not of this world;
upon meditating on the Gurū, the Kamdhenu is manifested.
There is no Chintamani stone, you can realize this for yourself;
the eminent nails of Srī Gurū Ji are the Chintamanis themselves.
There is no such Amriṯ, which embodies sweetness through taste;
the nectar of Srī Gurū Ji's knowledge-filled words is much sweeter."

"Indra is the king of the deities, but Srī Har Rai Ji are the king of the world.
