The First Installation of the Adi Granth

ਭਾਦੋਂ ੧੫ (August 31): The First Installation of the Adi Granth
-
Today's date marks a very significant event in the history of the Sikh Pānth. This very date is believed to be the day when the most important/respected Sikh scripture, the Adi Granth (now known as Sri Guru Granth Sahib) was first installed inside the Sri Hari Mandir Sahib (popularly known as the "Golden Temple"). With great effort I have translated a full chapter of the "Sri Gur Pratap Suraj Granth" which describes this very event in detail:

The Glory of the Sri Hari Mandir and the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji"

ਦੋਹਰਾ:

ਕਿਤਿਕ ਕਹਤ ਹੈਂ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਕੋ ਜਿਲਤ ਬੰਧਾਵਨਿ ਕਾਜ।

ਭੇਜਧੋ ਲਵਪੁਰਿ ਨਗਰ ਕੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜ॥੧॥

"Some say that in order to bind the 'Granth',

The Guru (helper of the poor) sent the 'Granth Sahib' to Lahore."

ਤਹਿਂ ਆਵਤਿ ਜਾਤੇ ਲਿਖਯੋ ਬੰਨੋ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਦੁਤੀਯ ॥

ਮਹਿਮਾ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਉੱਤਮ ਥੀਯ॥੨॥

"On his journey to and from the village, Bhai Banno wrote their own copy of the Granth,

The glory of the 'Satigurū' is superior in every way."

ਸ੍ਵੈਯਾ:

ਸੰਮਤ ਸੋਲਹਿ ਸੈ ਇਕ ਸਾਠਹਿ ਭਾਦਵ ਕੀ ਸੁਦਿ ਏਕਮ ਜਾਨੋ।

ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਸਮਾਪਤਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀਨਿ ਮਹਾਂ ਉਤਸਾਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਘਰ ਠਾਨੋ।

ਸੰਗਤਿ ਦੇਸ਼ ਬਿਦੇਸ਼ਨ ਕੀ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਮਨ ਆਨੰਦ ਦੀਰਘ ਮਾਨੋ।

ਦੇਖਨਿ ਆਵਤਿ ਭਾਉ ਬਧਾਵਤਿ ਕੋ ਲਿਖਵਾਵਨਿ ਕੋ ਹਿਤਵਾਨੋ॥੩॥

"Year 1661 (Bikrami Samvat) on the new moon of Bhadon 'twas,

When immense celebrations ensued from the completion of the 'Granth'.

The congregation of every land feel great contentment hearing the news.

Many come with love to see, others wish to do the same."

ਬੰਨੋ ਆਦਿਕ ਹੈ ਸਿਖ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਬੈਠਿ ਦਿਵਾਨ ਲਗਾਯੋ।

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪਾਸ ਬਿਰਾਜਤਿ ਚੰਦ ਮਨੋ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਸੁਹਾਯੋ।

ਸੀਖ ਲਗੇ ਸਭਿ ਕੋ ਤਬਿ ਦੇਵਨਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਯ ਭਰਯੋ ਬਚ ਯੋਂ ਫੁਰਮਾਯੋ।

'ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਸੁ ਭੌਜਲ ਕੋ ਤਰ ਜਾਤਿ ਸੁਖੇਨ ਜਿਨੀ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਯੋ॥੪॥

"Bhai Banno and the primal Sikh congregation set up the 'Divan' alongside the Guru.

Sri Har Gobind Sahib are seated nearby, as if the moon shining its beauty on the family.

Guru Ji begin to put forth their teachings, and speak the following words:

'The Granth is like a ship; all whom focus their mind upon it, shall safely cross the ocean of existence."

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੇਰ ਸਰੀਰ ਜੁਊ ਸਭਿ ਥਾਨ ਸਮੈ ਸਭਿ ਨਾ ਦਰਸੈ ਹੈਂ।

ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਰਿਦਾ ਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਇਹ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਉੱਤਮ ਹੈ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਲ ਰਹੈ ਹੈ।

ਮੇਰੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਤੇ ਯਾਂਤੇ ਹੈ ਦੀਰਘ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜਾਨਿ ਅਦਾਇਬ ਕੈ ਹੈ।

ਪੂਜਹੁ ਚੰਦਨ ਕੇਸਰ ਕੋ ਘਸਿ ਧੂਪ ਧੁਖਾਇ ਕੈ ਫੂਲ ਚਢੈ ਹੈ॥੫॥

"The physical vessel of Sri Guru Ji cannot be present everywhere at once.

Consider the Granth the conscience of the Guru, it shall be present at every place, and time.

The Granth is greater than my bodily form, so revere it as the true master.

Grind the saffron, light the incense, and offer flowers for its worship."

ਜੋ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੇਹਿ ਭਲੇ ਤਬਿ ਸੋਧਹਿ ਅਖਰ ਸੋਂ ਲਗ ਕੀ ਚੁਕਸਾਈ।

ਪਾਠ ਸਮਸਤ ਕਰੈ ਬੁਧਿ ਸੋਂ ਪਿਖਿ ਪੂਰਬ ਕੇ ਸਮ ਲੇਹਿ ਬਨਾਈ॥

ਆਪ ਤੇ ਘਾਟ ਨ ਬਾਧ ਕਰੈ, ਜਿ ਕਰੈ, ਹੁਇ ਮੂਰਖ ਸੋ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ।

ਔਰ ਬਨਾਇ ਨਵੋਂ ਨ ਲਿਖੈ ਬਿਚ ਕਾਬਯ, ਰਚੈ, ਸੁ ਰਚੌ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਕਾਈ॥੬॥

"Whoever writes it is pure, but he must be careful not to alter even the laga matra (vowels).

He must recite every prayer from it, and then copy it as it is.

He must not add nor remove anything in it; whoever does so is a fool; he will regret it.

He mustn't add any poetry of his own; if he does then he must keep it separately."

ਚੌਦਹਿ ਲੋਕ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ਬਲੀ, ਬਲ ਕੋ ਜਰ ਜਾਇ ਰਿਦੇ ਮਹਿਂ ਜੋਈ।

ਸੋ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਕੋ ਸਿਰ ਦੇ ਹੁਇ ਸੰਮੁਖ ਧੀਰ ਧਰੋਈ।

ਆਪਨੀ ਬਾਂਨੀ ਚਢਾਵਹਿ ਸੋ ਇਕ, ਹੋਇ ਇਸੋ ਨਹਿਂ ਦੂਸਰ ਕੋਈ।

ਪੂਜਹਿ ਜੋ ਇਛ ਧਾਰਿ ਸੁ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਯ ਲਹੈ ਜਮ ਪੀਰ ਨ ਹੋਈ॥੭॥

"He whom beholds his strength in his heart is the most potent of all.

He shall offer his head in benefaction and come forth and inhabit tranquility.

He whom reveres his own 'Bani' is a fool like no other.

Whoever worships the Granth on will, shall obtain liberation, and will not feel the wrath of Yama."

ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਮਹਾਂਨ ਮਹਾਤਮ ਜਾਂਹਿ ਬਖਾਨ ਕਰੈਂ ਸਮੁਦਾਏ।

ਅੰਤ ਨ ਪਾਵਤਿ ਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਨ ਸ਼ਾਰਦ ਨੇਤਿ ਹੀ ਨੇਤਿ ਅਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਬਤਾਏ।

ਜੋ ਸਰਬੋਤਮ ਜੋ ਸਰਬਾਸ਼੍ਰਿਯ ਤਾਂਹੀ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਇਸੀ ਮਹਿਂ ਗਾਏ।

ਨਾਮ ਸੁ ਨਾਮੀ ਕੋ ਭੇਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਇਹ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਸੁਹਾਏ ॥੮॥

"The Vedas and the Puranas are greatly regarded by the people.

Even Sheshnag and Saraswati could not explain their limit, even they regard them as endless.

The Granth sings the praises of the giver of liberation, the omnipotent lord.

There is no end for the 'Naam' nor for the one who recites it. This is the grace of the creator lord."

ਜੇਤਿਕ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਅਦਾਇਬ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤੇਤਿਕ ਹੀ ਫਲ ਪਾਵਹਿਗੋ।

ਧੂਪ ਧੁਖਾਇ ਘਸਾਇ ਕੈ ਚੰਦਨ ਕੇਸਰ ਕੋ ਅਰਚਾਵਹਿਗੋ।

ਭਾਵਨੀ ਧਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਚਾਹਿ ਉਮਾਹਤਿ ਦਯੋਸ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਦਰਸਾਵਹਿਗੋ।

ਪਾਠ ਕਰੈ ਕਿ ਸੁਨੈ ਮਨ ਏਕ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹੀ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਬਸਾਵਹਿਗੋ ॥੯॥

"The more they honor the Granth Sahib, the more fruitful they'll be.

If they light the incense, grind the saffron for its worship, and seek it upon will,

If they recite the prayers or listen with intent, and uphold the sermon in their heart,"

ਦੇਖਤ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਜੋਰਿ ਦੁਊ ਮਨ ਨੰਮ੍ਰਿ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਵਹਿਗੋ।

ਔਰਨਿ ਕੋ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਕਰੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਆਪ ਇਸੇ ਕੌ ਲਿਖਾਵਹਿਗੋ।

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰੈ ਘਰ ਮੈਂ ਅਸਥਾਪਹਿ ਪਾਠ ਸੁਨੇ ਹਰਖਾਵਹਿਗੋ।

ਸੋ ਜਗ ਬੰਧਨ ਛੇਦਨ ਕੈ ਨਰ ਅੰਤ ਗਤੀ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਪਾਵਹਿਗੋ ॥੧੦॥

"If they bow down in earnest with both hands pressed together,

If they tell others the message, write it themselves and get others to write it,

If they feel elated upon hearing the prayers,

Then their attachment to worldly things will be annihilated, and they shall receive salvation."

ਕਾਰਜ ਹੋਇ ਸੰਪੂਰਨ ਬਾਂਛਤਿ ਪਾਠ ਕਰੈ ਕਿ ਕਰਵਾਹਿਗੋ।

ਭੋਗ ਪਰੇ ਕਰਿਵਾਇ ਤਿਹਾਵਲ ਆਪ ਖਰੋ ਹੁਇ ਜਾਵਹਿਗੋ।

ਹਾਥ ਕੋ ਜੋਰਿ ਕਰੈ ਅਰਦਾਸ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਕੋ ਮਨ ਲਯਾਵਹਿਗੋ।

ਕਯੋਂ ਨ ਕਹੋ ਤਿਹ ਪੂਰਨ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਚਿਤ ਚਾਹਤਿ ਸੋ ਨਰ ਪਾਵਹਿਗੋ ॥੧੧॥

"Whoever recites (or gets recited) this Granth's prayers shall prosper in their work.

They shall prepare 'Karah Prashad' upon completion and stand up in respect.

If they do an 'Ardaas' with both hands pressed, how will their wishes not come true?

Whatever they will wish for in their heart will come to those on its own."

ਸਿੱਖ ਸਰੀਰ ਤਜੈ ਤਿਸ ਪੀਛਹਿ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਕੋ ਪਾਠ ਕਰਾਵਹਿਗੋ।

ਪੋਸ਼ਸ਼ ਕੋ ਅਰਪੈ ਤਬਿ ਪਾਠਕ ਭੋਜਨ ਚਾਰੁ ਖੁਲਾਵਹਿਗੋ।

ਔਰ ਜਥਾ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਤਿਹ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਲਯਾਇ ਕਰਾਹੁ ਬ੍ਰਤਾਵੈਗੋ।

ਸੋ ਸਿਖ ਹੋਇ ਸੁਖੇਨ ਮਹਾਂ, ਪਰਲੋਕ ਬਿਖੈ ਹਰਖਾਵਹਿਗੋ ॥੧੨॥

"Whenever a Sikh will leave its bodily form, they shall recite prayers from the Granth.

Clothing shall be donated, and the Pathak (readers) shall be fed a nice meal.

With their own authority they shall serve 'Karah Prashad'.

Then, the Sikh approaching Parlok (the afterlife) shall feel contentment."

ਔਰ ਕਹਾਂ ਲਗਿ ਜੇ ਜਗ ਕਾਰਜ ਪਾਠ ਕਰੇ ਸਿਧ ਹੋਵਹਿਂਗੇ।

ਸੰਤ ਮਹੰਤ ਚਹੈ ਨਹਿਂ ਯੌ ਪਠਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੋਵਹਿਂਗੇ।

ਨਿਸਾ ਸਿਮਰੈਂ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਿ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਪਠੈਂ ਅਘ ਖੋਵਹਿਂਗੇ।

ਅੰਤ ਸਮੈ ਜਮ ਕੋ ਨ ਪਿਖੈਂ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਇ ਹਮੈ ਸੁ ਅਲੋਵਹਿਂਗੇ ॥੧੩॥

"What more do I say, from reciting the prayers, all the world's affairs will be vindicated.

If saints and holy men don't wish this, they will pray with love and soullessly see the lord.

Night and day, they will recite 'Satnam' or read the Granth and erase their sins.

Then at the time of death, they will not need to see Yama, they will be liberated'."

ਦੋਹਰਾ:

ਬੈਠੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮ ਸਰ ਬੰਨੋ ਆਨਯੋ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ।

ਤਹਾਂ ਮਹਾਤਮ ਇਹ ਕਹਯੋ ਦੇਨਿ ਸੀਖ ਨਿਜ ਪੰਥ॥੧੪॥

"As the Guru is seated at Ramsar, Bhai Banno brings the Granth Sahib,

Then the Guru gives the Sikhs of that time, the knowledge of the supremacy of the Adi Granth."

ਚੌਪਈ:

ਤਯਾਰ ਭਯੋ ਜਬਿ ਜਿਲਤ ਬੰਧਾਈ। ਬੁੱਢੇ ਸੋਂ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਰਾ ਅਲਾਈ।

'ਕਹੋ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਿਸ ਥਾਨਾ। ਨਿਤ ਸ਼ੋਭਹਿ ਜਹਿਂ ਮਹਿਦ ਮਹਾਨਾ ॥੧੫॥

"When the Granth Sahib was finished being binded, Guru Ji say to Baba Budha Ji:

'Tell us where we shall place the Granth Sahib, where it will remain embellished'."

ਹਾਥ ਜੋਰਿ ਤਿਨ ਤਬਹਿ ਬਖਾਨੋ। 'ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਕੌਨ ਸਿਆਨੋ।

ਤਊ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਸਰ ਸੁਧਾ ਮਝਾਰਾ। ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ॥੧੬॥

"Baba Budha Ji press their hands together and say, 'O Sri Guru! Whom is wiser than you are.

But since you've asked, The Hari Mandir in the Ambrosial Pool has a beautiful Darbar (court)."

ਸਦਾ ਸਥਾਪਨਿ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਸੁ ਲਾਇਕ। ਸ਼ੋਭਹਿਗੋ ਇਮ ਤਹਾਂ ਸੁਭਾਇਕ।

ਸਿਹਜਾ ਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਮਝਾਰੇ। ਜਥਾ ਸ਼ੇਖ਼ ਸਾਂਈ ਛਬਿ ਧਾਰੇ ॥੧੭॥

"The Hari Mandir is forever worthy for the installation of the Adi Granth. It would look befitting inside it.

In the same way Sheshnag's bed is amidst the ocean, as if it is Vishnu's reflection,"

ਮਨਹੁ ਬੀਚ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਸੁ ਮੰਦਰ। ਬਿਸ਼ਨੁ ਬਿਰਾਜਹਿ ਛਬਿ ਸੋਂ ਅੰਦਰ'।

ਸੁਨਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਹੁ ਭਏ। ਜਥਾ ਜੋਗ ਇਨ ਬਰਨਨ ਕਏ॥੧੮॥

"Consider that this Mandir is in paradise, Vishnu's reflection shall ever be present within it.'

Upon hearing this, Guru Ji feel very pleased, and say 'Your words are very saintly."

ਬਨਯੋ ਸੁਧਾਸਰ ਬਿਚ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਿਰ। ਇਹ ਸਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਲੋਕੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ।

ਤਥਾ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਰਚਯੋ। ਸਰਬੋਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਨਿ ਖਚਯੋ॥੧੯॥

"The Hari Mandir has been built amidst the Ambrosial Pool. There is no place like it in any of the three realms.

Now the auspicious recitation of the Sri Granth Sahib has completed. This place has merged with the name of Hari."

ਉਚਿਤ ਮੇਲ ਦੋਨਹੁ ਕੋ ਬਨੈ। ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਤਨ ਭਨੈਂ।

'ਸੁਨਿ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ ! ਸੁ ਬਾਕ ਹਮਾਰੇ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ॥੨੦॥

"The matching of the two is the most appropriate. Night and day, hymns shall be sung in the name of Hari'.

Then Guru Ji say to Bhai Gurdas 'Listen Bhai Gurdas! In the Darbar (court) of Guru Ram Das,"

ਦਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਬਧਹਿਂ ਸਮਾਜ ਬਡੇਰੇ। ਦੁਖ ਦਾਰਿਦ ਕੋ ਆਇ ਨ ਨੇਰੇ।

ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਹਰਿ ਰੂਪ ਬਿਲੰਦਾ। ਸੇਵਹਿਂ ਸੇਵਕ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਦ ਮੁਕੰਦਾ॥॥੨੧॥

"Each day, people will crowd together. The disease of pain and suffering will not come near.

The Hari Mandir is the manifestation of Hari. The congregation shall worship the giver of liberation."

ਲਛਮੀ ਨਿਸ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਇਸ ਸੇਵਹਿ। ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਧਰਹਿਂ ਦਾਸ ਫਲ ਲੇਵਹਿਂ।

ਆਜ ਬਾਸ ਇਸ ਥਲ ਹੀ ਕੀਜਹਿ। ਹੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਕੋ ਤਹਿਂ ਗਮਨੀਜਹਿ' ॥੨੨॥

"Night and day, Lakshmi shall do its worship. In devotion, disciples shall obtain their fruits of labour.

Today we will stay where we are at. Right at dawn we shall travel to that place (the Hari Mandir)."

ਸਭਿਨਿ ਅਹਾਰ ਕਰਯੋ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਖਾਨਾ। ਭੂਮ ਸੈਨ ਕੀਨਸਿ ਤਿਸ ਥਾਨਾ।

ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਆਦਰ ਕੇ ਹੇਤੁ। ਭੂਤਲ ਸੈਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਮੇਤ॥੨੩ ॥

"Everybody eats a meal, and spends the night there as well.

In respect of the Granth Sahib, they all sleep on the ground."

ਰਿਦੈ ਬਿਚਾਰਨਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕਰੈਂ। ਟਹਿਲ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਕੀ ਕੌਨ ਸੁਧਰੈ।

ਬੇਦੀ ਤੇਹਣ ਭੱਲੇ ਬੰਸ। ਸੋਢੀ ਜੇ ਕੁਲ ਕੇ ਅਵਤੰਸ਼॥੨੪॥

"Guru Ji think to themselves, 'Who can serve the Granth Sahib best?'

The Bedis, Trehans, Bhallas or the Sodhis?"

ਨਿਜ ਕੁਲ ਕੋ ਇਨ ਕੋ ਹੰਕਾਰਾ। ਕਰਿ ਨ ਸਕਹਿਂਗੇ ਸੇਵ ਉਦਾਰਾ।

ਇਹ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਦੀਵਾ। ਨਿਰਹੰਕਾਰ ਜਿਨਹੁ ਮਨ ਨੀਵਾ॥੨੫॥

"They all indulge in pride for their own dynasties. They won't be able to provide ideal service.

They are forever the object of the disciple, whom have an ego-filled mind."

ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਖੈ ਨਿਪੁਨ ਜੋ ਹੋਇ। ਕਰੀਅਹਿ ਇਹਾਂ ਸਥਾਪਨਿ ਸੋਇ।

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੋ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕੀਨਿ। ਅਸ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਬਿਚ ਸੇਵ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥੨੬॥

"Whoever is skilled in selfless service, we shall implement that person in this position.

Baba Budha Ji have seen Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, so they must be proficient in this Seva'."

ਇਮ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਪਾਈ। ਜਾਗੇ ਜਾਮਨਿ ਜਾਮ ਰਹਾਈ।

ਬੁੱਢਾ ਪੁਨ ਗੁਰਦਾਸ ਸੁ ਜਾਗੇ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਮਹਿਂ ਪਾਗੇ ॥੨੭॥

"After these thoughts, Guru Sahib went to sleep and woke up with 1 Pehar (3 Hours) of the Night left.

Baba Budha Ji and Bhai Gurdas Ji, whom had been coloured with the love of the Guru's lotus feet, awoke as well."

ਸੌਚ ਰਾਮਸਰ ਕੀਨਿ ਸ਼ਨਾਨਾ। ਬੱਦ੍ਰੀ ਤਰ ਬੈਠੇ ਕਰਿ ਧ੍ਯਾਨਾ।

ਦ੍ਵੈ ਘਟਿਕਾ ਲਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਤ ਕਾਲਾ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਅਰਜਨ ਬਚ ਕਹਯੋ ਰਸਾਲਾ॥੨੮॥

"They bathed in the Pool of Ramsar, and sat under the Beri (Tree) in a meditative state.

After realizing that the Amrit Vela (Ambrosial Time) has arrived, Guru Arjan Dev Ji say:"

'ਬੁੱਢਾ ਨਿਜ ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਧਰਿ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ। ਆਗੇ ਚਲਹੁ ਸੁਧਾਸਰ ਪੰਥ ॥

ਮਾਨਿ ਬਾਕ ਲ ਭਯੋ ਅਗਾਰੇ। ਚਮਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਕਰ ਧਾਰੇ॥੨੯॥

"'Baba Budha Ji! place the Granth upon your head and walk towards the Ambrosial Pool.'

Baba Ji follow the Guru's orders and place the Granth on their head as Guru Ji follow behind them."

ਸੰਖ ਅਨਿਕ ਲਘੁ ਦੰਦਭਿ ਬਾਜੇ। ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰ ਊਚ ਸੁਰ ਗਾਜੇ।

ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਚੰਦ। ਸੰਗ ਚਲਤ ਹੁਇ ਸ਼ੋਭ ਬਿਲੰਦ॥੩੦॥

"Various conch shells and drums are being played as loud Jakara's (cheers) are being exclaimed.

Beautiful Sri Har Gobind Sahib are walking alongside with all their glory."

ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਮਹਿਂ ਜਾਇ ਪਹੂੰਚੇ। ਰਾਗੀ ਰਾਗ ਕਰਤਿ ਸੁਰ ਊਚੇ।

ਮੰਜੀ ਸਹਤ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਤਹਿਂ ਥਾਪਿ। ਬੈਠੇ ਨਿਕਟ ਗੁਰੂ ਤਬਿ ਆਪਿ॥੩੧॥

"They arrive at the Hari Mandir as the Raagis are singing beautiful Ragas.

The Granth Sahib was placed upon a Manji (cot) as Guru Ji sit down nearby it."

ਵਾਰ ਭੋਗ ਕੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਲਾਈ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਅਰਜਨ ਪੁਨ ਗਿਰਾ ਅਲਾਈ।

'ਬੁੱਢਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਖੋਲਹੁ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ। ਲੇਹੁ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਸੁਨਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਪੰਥ' ॥੩੨॥

"Everyone gracefully listened to the 'Aasa Di Vaar'. As it reached completion, Guru Arjan Dev Ji say:

'Baba Budha Ji! Open the Granth Sahib and articulate a Shabad so everyone can hear'."

ਸੁਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨ ਰੁਚਿਰ ਮਨ ਲਾਯਕ। ਸੱਤ ਬਾਕ ਮੁਖ ਜਲਜ ਅਲਾਇਕ।

ਅਦਬ ਸੰਗ ਤਬਿ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਸੁ ਖੋਲਾ। ਲੇ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਬੁੱਢਾ ਮੁਖ ਬੋਲਾ ॥੩੩॥

"On hearing the Guru's charming command, Baba Budha Ji say 'Sati-Bachan' from their lotus voice.

Then, they open the Granth Sahib with great esteem and articulate the 'Shabad' in a loud voice: "

ਸੂਹੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫॥
ਸੰਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਆਪਿ ਖਲੋਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਰਾਵਣਿ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ॥
ਧਰਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਤਾਲੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਲੁ ਛਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ॥
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਲੁ ਛਾਇਆ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਾਜੁ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਸਗਲ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਾਰੁ ਭਇਆ ਜਗ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਾਥੇ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਸੂਰੇ ॥
ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਚੁਤ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਜਸੁ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਗਾਇਆ॥
ਅਪਨਾ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ॥੧॥

Soohee, Fifth Mehl:

The Lord Himself has stood up to resolve the affairs of the Saints; He has come to complete their tasks.

The land is beautiful, and the pool is beautiful; within it is contained the Ambrosial Water.

The Ambrosial Water is filling it, and my job is perfectly complete; all my desires are fulfilled.

Congratulations are pouring in from all over the world; all my sorrows are eliminated.

The Vedas and the Puranas sing the Praises of the Perfect, Unchanging, Imperishable Primal Lord.

The Transcendent Lord has kept His promise, and confirmed His nature; Nanak meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਸੁਨਿ ਸਭਿਹੂੰ ਤਬਿ ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਯੋ। ਦੀਨ ਬੰਧੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤਿਨ ਲਖਿ ਪਾਯੋ।

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕਰ ਤੇ ਚਮਰ ਫਿਰੰਤਾ। ਬੁੱਢਾ ਜਪੁਜੀ ਪਾਠ ਕਰੰਤਾ॥੩੪॥

"After hearing the 'Shabad' everyone bow their head and remember the Merciful Lord.

Guru Arjan Dev Ji wave the fly-whisk with their own hands, as Baba Budha Ji recite 'Japuji Sahib'."

ਸੰਗਤਿ 'ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ' ਸੁਨਿ ਕਹੈ। ਅਧਿਕ ਅਨੰਦ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਤੇ ਲਹੈ।

ਜਪੁਜੀ ਭੋਗ ਪਾਇ ਜੈਕਾਰਾ। ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਵਤਿ ਸਭਿਨਿ ਉਚਾਰਾ॥੩੫॥

"The congregation continuously proclaim 'Dhan!, Dhan!' while listening, in a state of supreme bliss.

Upon completion of 'Japuji Sahib' everyone bow their heads and exclaim 'Jakara's' of 'Jai, Jai, Kar!'."

ਅਤਿ ਅਨੰਦ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਅਰਜਨ ਨਾਥ। ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਾਰਥ ਮਾਨਿ ਸਨਾਥ॥

ਅਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਤੇ ਗਦ ਗਦ ਹੋਏ। ਗੁਨ ਗਨ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਜੋਏ॥੩੬॥

"Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji remain pleased from how things occurred.

With immense love, they manifest the qualities of Waheguru."

ਹਰਿਮੰਦਿਰ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਸਿ ਅਗਾਰੀ। ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਉਚਾਰੀ।

ਸਿਹਜਾ ਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਬਿਕੁੰਠ ਮਹਾਨਾ। ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਲੋਕ ਸ਼ਿਵਲੋਕ ਸਥਾਨਾ ॥੩੭॥

"After coming out of the Hari Mandir, standing in front of it, they pay it admiration.

Sheshnag leaves its beautiful bed in paradise, Brahma leaves Brahmaloka, ShivJi leaves Shivlok,"

ਸ੍ਵੇਤ ਦੀਪ ਤਜਿ ਲੋਕਾ ਲੋਕ। ਪੁਰੀ ਅਜੁੱਧਯਾ ਆਦਿ ਅਸ਼ੋਕ।

ਪੁਨ ਦੁਆਰਿਕਾ ਆਦਿਕ ਥਾਨ। ਸਭਿ ਕੋ ਤਜਿ ਕਰਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਭਗਵਾਨ॥੩੮॥

"Leaving Lok Parbat, leaving Svait Deep, Rama leaves Ayodhya Puri,

and Krishna leaves Dwarka. Leaving everything,"

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ। ਆਨਿ ਬਸੇ ਇਸ ਥਾਨ ਉਦਾਰਾ।

ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਮਹਿਂ ਇਸੀ ਸਮਾਨ। ਨਾਂਹਿ ਨ ਆਨ ਸਥਾਨ ਮਹਾਨ॥੩੯॥

"All have settled down at the Darbar (court) of Sri Guru Ram Das.

Every deity has left its abode, in the age of Kali Yuga, there is no better place than the Hari Mandir."

ਤੀਨ ਲੋਕ ਪਤਿ ਜਹਾਂ ਬਿਰਾਜੇ। ਭੋਗਵਤੀ ਸੁਰ ਪੁਰਿ ਪਿਖਿ ਲਾਜੇ।

ਸਭਿ ਸਥਾਨ ਕੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਚਲਿ ਆਈ। ਆਨਿ ਵਸੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਸ਼ਰਨਾਈ॥੪੦॥

"Where the masters of the three realms are present, even Bhagwati feels embarrassed on that sight.

The Lakshmi of all places has come and settled down in the lotus feet of the Guru."

'ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ। ਪਈਯਤਿ ਜਹਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਚਾਰਾ' ॥

ਇਮ ਉਤਸਾਹਤਿ ਦਿਵਸ ਬਿਤਾਯੋ। ਸੰਧਯਾ ਭਈ ਤਰਨਿ ਅਸਤਾਯੋ॥੪੧॥

"Blessed is the Darbar (court) of the Guru, where the 4 treasures of the soul are obtained.

In this way, the congregation spent the day in fervour. The evening came, and the sun began to set."

ਬੁੱਢੇ ਬੂਝਨਿ ਕੀਨਸਿ ਤਬੈ। 'ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਰਹੈ ਕਿਤ ਨਿਸ ਮਹਿਂ ਅਬੈ ?

ਜਹਾਂ ਆਪ ਕੀ ਆਇਸੁ ਹੋਇ॥ ਕਰਿਹਿਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਮਿਰਜਾਦਾ ਸੋਇ' ॥੪੨॥

"Then Baba Budha Ji ask, 'Where will the Granth be accommodated for the night?

Whatever you command, the Sikhs shall follow it as conduct'."

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਕਹਯੋ 'ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ। ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਪ੍ਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਕੋ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ।

ਡੇਢ ਜਾਮ ਜਾਮਨਿ ਜਬ ਜਾਇ। ਪਠਹਿਂ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਕਿਰਤਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੪੩ ॥

"Upon hearing this, Guru Ji say, 'The Hari Mandir is the court of God, and the Adi Granth is God's avatar.

When 1.5 Pehars of the night passes, then sing the hymn of Kirtan Sohila'."

ਬਹੁਰੋ ਲੇ ਜਾਵਹੁ ਅਸਵਾਰਾ। ਜਿਸੀ ਕੋਠਰੀ ਰਹਨਿ ਹਮਾਰਾ।

ਤਹਾਂ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਹੁ ਜੁਤ ਮਾਨ। ਜਾਮ ਡੇਢ ਜਾਮਨਿ ਰਹਿ ਆਨ॥੪੪॥

"Then mount the Sri Granth Sahib and bring it into the same cell in which we abide.

There, with reverence, accommodate the Sri Granth Sahib. When 1.5 Pehars remain of the night,"

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿਮੰਦਿਰ ਤਬਹਿ ਸ਼ਨਾਨਹੁ। ਫਰਸ਼ ਅਨੇਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਕੇ ਠਾਨਹੁ।

ਦੀਪਕ ਸਦਾ ਘ੍ਰਿੱਤ ਕੋ ਬਾਰੋ। ਜਾਮ ਨਿਸਾ ਜਬਿ ਰਹੀ ਨਿਹਾਰੋ॥੪੫॥

"Then come back and bathe the Hari Mandir, and clean the floors in various ways.

Always light a candle of Ghee, when 1 Pehar of the night remains."

ਰਾਗੀ ਆਸਾ ਵਾਰ ਸੁ ਗਾਵਹਿਂ। ਅਨਿਕ ਰਾਗ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਨਾਵਹਿਂ।

ਦ੍ਵੈ ਘਟਿਕਾ ਜਾਮਨਿ ਰਹਿ ਜਬੈ। ਆਨਹੁ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤਬੈ ॥੪੬॥

"Then the Raagis must sing Aasa Di Vaar. They must sing Shabads in various Ragas.

When 2 Gharis (48 mins.) of the night remains, Then bring back the Sri Granth Sahib Ji."

ਵਾਰ ਭੋਗ ਤੇ ਖੋਲਿ ਪਢੀਜੈ। ਇਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਕਾਰ ਨਿਤ ਕੀਜਹਿ' ॥

ਇਮ ਕਹਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਬੈਠਿ ਰਹਾਏ। ਚੌਂਕੀ ਸੁਨੀ ਕਾਨੜਾ ਗਾਏ॥੪੭॥

"After the completion of Aasa Di Vaar, Open the Granth Sahib and take Hukam-nama.'

After saying this Sri Guru Ji sit down and listen to a hymn sung in Kanra Raga."

ਬਹੁਰ ਸੋਹਿਲਾ ਪਠਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਸਿ। ਉਠਿ ਤਬਿ ਸਭਿ ਕੀਨਸਿ ਅਰਦਾਸ।

ਬੁੱਢੇ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਲੀਨ ਸਿਰ ਧਾਰੀ। ਚਵਰ ਕਰਹਿਂ ਗੁਰ ਵਾਰੰਵਾਰੀ ॥੪੮॥

"Then after a recitation of 'Kirtan Sohila', everyone gets up to do an 'Ardaas'.

Then, Baba Budha Ji pick up the Sri Granth Sahib on their head as Guru Ji wave the fly-whisk."

ਸੰਖਨਿ ਕੀ ਧੁਨਿ ਕੀਨਿ ਬਿਸਾਲਾ। ਬਾਦਿਤ ਅਪਰ ਬਜੇ ਤਿਸ ਕਾਲਾ।

ਰਹੈਂ ਕੋਠਰੀ ਮਹਿਂ ਗੁਰ ਸਦਾ। ਗਮਨਹਿਂ ਸਦਨ ਆਪਨੇ ਕਦਾ॥੪੯॥

"The loud sound of conch shells and other instruments resounded.

In the cell where Guru Ji remained the most (and only went home every so-often),"

ਤਿਹ ਸਥਾਨ ਲੇ ਕਰਿ ਜਬਿ ਗਏ। ਸੁਠ ਪ੍ਰਯੰਕ ਤਬਿ ਡਾਸਤਿ ਭਏ।

ਸੇਜ ਬੰਦ ਗੁੰਫੇ ਬਡ ਜ਼ਰੀ। ਸੁੰਦਰ ਫੂਲਨਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਧਰੀ॥੫੦॥

"When they brought the Granth to that place, A beautiful bed was laid.

On it they laid a fine cloth and placed garlands of beautiful flowers."

ਤਹਾਂ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਕੌ ਕੀਨੋ। ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰ ਭੂਤਲ ਨਿਕਟ ਅਸੀਨੋ।

ਕਬਿ ਕਬਿ ਸਦਨ ਆਪਨੇ ਜਾਹਿਂ। ਨਾਂਹਿ ਤ ਰਹੈਂ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਕੇ ਪਾਹਿ॥੫੧॥

"On the bed, they accommodated the Sri Granth Sahib. Guru Ji (in respect) slept on the ground nearby.

Guru Ji visit their home once-in-awhile, but mostly stay near the Sri Granth Sahib Ji."

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਗ੍ਰਿੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ। ਭਈ ਜਥਾ ਉਚਰੀ ਮੈਂ ਤਥਾ।

ਸੁਨਤਿ ਪਠਤਿ ਚਿਤ ਬਾਂਛਤ ਦਾਤਾ। ਗੁਰ ਪਗ ਰਤਿ ਤੇ ਆਤਮ ਗਯਾਤਾ॥੫੨॥

"The way it occurred, is how I (Kavi Santokh Singh) have presented it (The event).

On hearing or reading is how wishes get fulfilled, and being coloured with the lotus feet of the Guru is how true spiritual knowledge is obtained."
